What is Motivational Interviewing (MI)?

MI is a therapeutic approach designed to help people get motivated to change their lives for the better. It also helps them make a real commitment to that change.

How does MI help with Substance Use Disorder?

Motivational Interviewing can help you learn more about what you want from your life and help you work out ways to get it. Often used alongside other effective therapies, MI is a great way to reflect on your thoughts and feelings so that you can develop a stronger sense of confidence and motivation to recover—and take ownership of your own life.

Frequently Asked Questions

I’m not a big talker; will I need to talk in therapy?
Since MI is a form of talk therapy, speaking with your therapist is part of the process. But don’t worry: our therapists will never force you to speak about something you’re not ready for. Their whole job is to support you in every way possible.
How long does MI take?
Sessions are typically 45-60 minutes. MI is often combined with other types of therapy for maximum benefit. The duration of your therapy will depend on many different factors. Either way, we’ll always be here to support you.
Will DBT stop my cravings?
Unfortunately, no. There is no guarantee that Dialectical Behavior Therapy will stop you from having cravings. But it can help you deal with cravings and triggers in a much healthier way—and give you the support you need to prevent relapse.
